Recycling Center News Recycling Center Snow DaysIn the event of a snowstorm that causes local schools to be closed on a Wednesday, the Recycling Center will also be closed. Hardwick Selectmen Appoint New Recycling CoordinatorThe Hardwick Board of Selectmen last week appointed Christina King of West Hardwick to the position of Recycling Coordinator, a position held for many years by Linda Paquet. Both Paquet and the Recycling Commission interviewed several candidates and unanimously recommended Ms. King. She brings a lot of enthusiasm, new ideas and experience to the position and will start immediately; she formerly worked for the Worcester DPW in the Recycling Division. Hardwick Recycles for Nature’s Classroom (update) The Hardwick Recycling Center encourages recycling and community involvement of all kinds. In a repeat program, we invite all our townsfolk to participate in a special effort to raise funds for Nature’s Classroom by donating deposit bottles and cans at the center. Last year we raised over $2500 for the program and hope to increase that donation this year. Nature’s Classroom is a unique educational experience for students and their teachers, offering the very best in environmental education. At Nature's Classroom students take an active role in their education by participating in exciting hands-on interdisciplinary classes. Nature's Classroom works closely with teachers to create a learning partnership that lasts a lifetime. In Hardwick, all 6th graders attend a 4-day program in May at the Wakefield, RI site, an exciting marine science environment. The children raise funds by selling catalog items, but we would like to help them. What easier and painless way than to bring your returnables to the garage at the Recycling Center! We only ask that keep them separate from your regular recycling. Please join in this very worthwhile effort. If you’d like to read more about Nature’s Classroom, check out their website at www.naturesclassroom.org. Many thanks.Hazardous Waste Collection Day - September 22, 2007Hardwick residents will be offered the opportunity to take part in North Brookfield’s Hazardous Waste collection day on September 22, 2007 from 9 am to noon. Hardwick residents with current (white) FY 2008 recycling stickers can participate but must pay the following disposal costs: $20 for 5 gallons or less of ordinary HHW or $40 for 5 - 10 gallons. The chemist running the collection will decide the cost of unusual hazardous waste costing more than $4/gallon. The following is a list of acceptable hazardous wastes: drain cleaners, metal polish, photo chemicals, dry cleaning fluids, rust preventatives, wood strippers, paint thinner, sealants, gasoline, engine and radiator flushes, old chemistry sets, herbicides, brake fluid, pool chemicals, creosote, fertilizer, moth balls, ammonia, oven cleaners, arts and crafts supplies, floor cleaners, radiator cleaners, wood preservatives, oil based paints, solvent degreasers, antifreeze, transmission fluid, pesticides, insect sprays, rodent killers, muriatic acid, kerosene, bleaches, cesspool cleaners, and mercury. The following items will not be accepted: latex paint, compress gas cylinders, explosives or shock sensitive materials and ammunition, unknown materials, radioactive materials, infectious or biologically active materials, dioxin, tri-, tetra- and pentachiorophenols and their chlorophenoxy derivative acids, esters, ethers, amine, and other salts. Do not bring latex paint or propane cylinders. Latex paint can be mixed with kitty litter and disposed with regular trash. Outdated cylinders can be returned to Osterman Gas on Rt. 32 in Ware for $5 each. Please take advantage of this regional service, as Hardwick will not sponsor its own collection during this current fiscal year. The next regional collection will take place in May 2008. For more information, call 413-477-0941 Click here for printable version of this information. New FY2008 stickers are now available. There will be a $20 charge for Hardwick residents and a $75 charge for non-residents
New Rules for Swap Shed - July 25, 2007There has been too much broken, incomplete, dirty, unusable, unrecyclable material coming into the Swap Shed recently. It is trash and we have to pay for trash removal as you do. Check with an attendant before leaving any material, and under no circumstances, leave material outside the buildings when the center is closed. What is unacceptable? Mattresses, box springs, upholstered furniture, sofas, broken or incomplete toys and games, moldy books, cracked or chipped dishes, etc. Please use common sense in deciding what to bring to the Swap Shed. Pack it in small boxes or plastic bags so that pieces won’t get separated or broken. A blender without a top is of no use to anyone! We are trying to offer a good service, but leaving junk that should go in the trash will only hurt the program. Thanks for being reasonable. |
